What is Literature?
Literature is interaction.
Through literature, we communicate our feelings and ideas by means of writing. On the other hand, we intake other people's ideas and feelings through reading.
Literature is present in all cultures. It takes us to places where we may never have heard before or may have never come to visit. We meet people who are not from our time and we experience what they have gone through. This is how powerful literature is.
Literature can be divided into two major divisions: non-fiction and fiction. The former is based on facts. Thus, it is real and never created through man's imagination. The latter is a make believe but, with the great skills of the authors, they make it appear as if it is real. Novels, poems, essays, plays, short stories, biography and auto-biography, history, folktales and myths, journals and diaries are examples of literature, to name some.
Moreover, literature does not only exist through manuscripts or writings. It can also be acted out as in the case of drama.
Literature for it to last must reflect the needs of the people in its time since it tends to relate and to entertain people. If a piece of literature lasts for generations, it means that it is really good and its value is still appreciated.
What is then the value of Literature in the Engineering field? Since it is part of Humanities and it deals with people's thoughts and emotions, it makes someone more sensitive while interacting with others. Hence, it creates a harmonious working relationship through the values and virtues acquired in the study of Literature.
